WHAT TO DO TO CURE URINARY TRACT INFECTION AT HOME

            URINARY TRACT INFECTION

Urinary tract infection or cystitis is the infection of urinary bladder. Generally women are affected more as the urethra (tube connected to bladder through which urine passes out) is located so near to the rectum. Thus bacteria can easily swim through this to bladder.

  Nearly 50% of women suffer from this disease in their lifetime. There is frequent urge to evacuate urine even when the bladder is not full. There is burning sensation while passing urine. Blood and pus can also come out with urine. There can be slight fever and pain in the pelvis or lower back. It may be due to bacteria E.coli which transfers from the colon to the bladder.

Cystitis may also result due to infection in the parts adjacent or connected to the bladder i.e. kidney or urethra. It can also result from constipation or stones in kidney or bladder.

If the infection is severe, it is treated by antibiotics. But  antibiotics also destroy the beneficial bacteria in our intestine. So if the problem is mild then it can be tackled through diet. Diet is also utmost important for those who have recurrent infections.

As different food have enormous healing powers. The foods we eat help us to keep away from diseases. As the food have antimicrobial and antifungal properties. So take care of the food you eat. Some of the foods that are helpful in cystitis are –

Cherries – These are effective remedy for cystitis. 1 cup of cherries taken three times daily can provide relief in burning sensation.

Cucumber – Cucumber juice is very beneficial to cure cystitis. 1 cup of cucumber juice can be mixed with 1tsp honey and 1tbsp of lemon. This is very effective diuretic and helpful to cure cystitis. It can be taken thrice daily.

Radish leaves – Radish leaves are antibacterial in nature. 150 ml of juice can be consumed.

Garlic – Garlic has very potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. 4 to 5 cloves of garlic can be cut and taken with water. Pickle of garlic can also be consumed.

Water – Drink lots of water. As it will wash out all the toxins and impurities. It will also help in relieving burning sensation. 10 to 12 glasses of water can be consumed.

Barley gruel – ½ cup of barley gruel can be consumed with equal amount of lassi (buttermilk) added in it. It can be taken twice daily.

Spinach – 100 ml of spinach juice is given with equal amount of coconut water added in it. Drink this twice daily. It is a effective remedy for cystitis.

Lemon water – Lemon water is also very effective. Drink it thrice daily with 1tsp of lemon added in it.

Curd – Curd is very helpful in combating the infection. As it has bacteria which hinders the growth of harmful bacteria. It also increases the beneficial bacterial flora in the intestine.

Foods to avoid

Alcohol – Avoid alcohol as it causes dehydration. If there is less fluid in the body then there are more chances of infection.


Caffeine products – Eat less of caffeine products like tea or coffee and cold drinks. As these will irritate the already infected bladder.
